an interactive notebook for coaching cycles!
Since shifting to a student-centered coaching framework based on the work of Diane Sweeney my forms have evolved greatly. I now use an interactive notebook that aligns with each phase of my coaching cycle. Currently my coaching cycles range between 4-6 weeks. I have about 5 cycles going at a time and they all follow this flow: Before I launch my cycles, I resend an overview page and invitation to all my staff. The overview form helps demystify the process and lower colleagues' trepidations about starting a coaching cycle. Providing clarity about what my role can look like in the classroom has been very beneficial to easing any anxiety about sharing the classroom with me. I've redefined my role in the classroom is based on Diane Sweeney's six coaching moves, because it shouldn't always be about us demoing lessons! To help teachers and myself both track the progress of our cycle I use a variety of forms that align with each phase. These forms include simple guiding questions to help facilitate our conversation and prompt teacher reflection. The bottom portion helps remind us both of the agreed upon next steps. The biggest benefit to using designated forms is the transparency and consistency it creates for teachers during the coaching cycle. It also helps teachers take shared ownership of the coaching and see it as a non-threatening learning experience.
So who keeps the notes? Both of us do! I have a master binder that holds my notes for all of my coaching cycles and I also provide teachers with a three prong folder containing all the forms. Having a place to store all of our notes and discussions help teachers stay organized too. I'm currently playing with the idea of creating spiral notebooks with all the forms instead of just having a folder. Interested in using an interactive notebook to help guide your coaching cycles?
