preserving and promoting PD learningLast summer I attended a BeGLAD Language Institute hosted by our county office of education. This training left me with many great ideas but one that stood out to me was the use of 'literacy reinforcers'. In the world of BeGLAD, every interaction with students is an opportunity to reinforce language and concepts from the current unit of study, down to the incentives teachers give. During a unit of study, teachers give informational 'trading cards', bookmarks, or stickers containing a fun fact as rewards. Automatically, my mind thought about how this could be applied to professional development and supporting teacher learning. Handouts are a staple in any PD session, it the first thing teachers look for, some even get double copies so they can keep a 'clean copy', and it often ends up in a pile of papers rarely to be referenced again. The challenge becomes creating a resource that is succinct, durable, and easy to track down. With this in mind, I gravitate toward creating PD Bookmarks printed on cardstock and if I'm feeling fancy (and I don't have a million participants) laminated! Due to formatting it is more time consuming than a traditional handout, however, I find that teachers are more likely to reference their bookmarks because they store them inside their teacher editions. After the PD, I always keep extras in my office so I can reference them during coaching sessions or hand them out like a PD on the go. Plus, my administrators love having copies so that they reference them during debriefs with teachers. I can't lie, it absolutely makes me smile when I go into classrooms and spot them in use! Below are examples of my two most useful PD Bookmarks for introducing Eureka Math and Guided Reading. You can also find them at my TPT by clicking on the images! I hope to have some time this summer to create more to share with you!
