WHY Learning walks are the best form of job embedded professional development there is!!
In the most basic terms, learning walks are opportunities for colleagues to visit each others classrooms to observe a specific focus area. The focus area can be self-selected or site directed but it is most effective when teachers self-select a focus area. This increases their investment in the experience and moves it away from being a practice in compliance. Learning walks are NOT instructional rounds or walkthroughs!
Interested in setting up learning walks at your site? Here are some quick tips. Scheduling Learning Walks Decide how teachers will be released to observe each other. This will most likely involve booking a sub. Be wary of school-wide activities. Once you have a day selected you need to advertise, advertise, advertise! I make a point to personally reach out to new teachers, or colleagues who have shared that they would like new ideas. Before Learning Walks
